Movie Script Contest

Click on each question for a more in-depth explanation given below:

Why should I enter Movie Script Contest?

The main reasons to enter any screenplay contest are multiple: win awards and prizes, get feedback to improve material before sending it to market, see where you stack up against the competition, build your writer’s resume with competition placements and wins, and gain access to production companies who have the power to purchase your script. At Movie Script Contest, we strive to excel in all these regards, but if we have an emphasis, it’s on those factors most likely to advance a writer’s career, and make material production-worthy; namely feedback and industry access.

That’s why entrants have the option of ordering our inexpensive “feedback” from our experienced, industry-savvy judges. Also, if you are entering our short script contest; you now have a chance to see your short script made into a short film. If you do win or place in the feature category, we will shamelessly promote you to our producer partners and the industry at large.

I don’t live in the US. Can I still enter the competition?

We welcome international entrants, as long as you can comply with all contest rules and regulations. International contestants can mail a copy of the script using letterhead sized paper, or the local equivalent (A4). The script must be in English and your entry fee must be in U.S. dollars.

Can I submit an adaptation of a book or play?

No, all submitted work must be in screenplay form, either feature script or short script, no treatments, plays or adaptations allowed. Work must be original and solely owned by author(s)

Can I submit more than one script?

Yes. You can submit as many scripts in either short or feature categories as you wish.

What should I put on the title page of my script?

Apart from the title and your name, you should also list your name, address, email address (if you have one) and phone number in the bottom left hand corner of the title page.

Can I enter a short longer than 30 pages or a feature script longer than 125 pages?

No, the script must adhere to the page length guidelines (features 80-125 pages) and shorts (up to 30 pages). The purpose of this rule is to conform to industry standards. Screenplays and short scripts longer than our rules allow are not the industry norm and are at a disadvantage in any script marketplace. So it’s best to edit your material down to fit the page length rules.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

Our feedback is more like studio coverage and is one of our core strengths. We pride ourselves on giving each and every writer feedback that will indicate good points and areas to improve. We go far beyond what sometimes passes as feedback - a single paragraph of vague generalities, and strive to offer the writer something meaningful that can be used to improve their work and their writing. Typically our feedback is a page or two of useful notes and suggestions; we even have a suggested reading feature. Our judges are all veterans of the industry, and are minimally sold or optioned writers, writing contest winners or readers/ development execs in the industry. In some cases all three. Also, almost no other contest offers feedback on short scripts, we do! This alone is worth the entry.

Do you distribute winning entries to agents, managers and literary agencies?

That’s right! The winning feature length script and the top ten loglines are read by our producer partners; these established companies have proven credits and are among the biggest names in Hollywood. These companies have agreed in advance to read the winning script and the top ten loglines. Production companies and literary managers love this; since to them, screenplay contests are a free reader and talent scout service, where they get to read quality material without having to sift through work that’s not ready. You can’t buy this level of access!

If I sell my script, do you take a percentage?

Absolutely not, you wrote it, you benefit.

If I win who owns the rights to my work?

You do, completely.

Is it a requirement that I register my work with the WGA or Copyright Office?

No, you can enter your screenplay or short without registration, but it is highly recommended you do so. We encourage this to protect the writer.

Is my script safe with Movie Script Contest?

Yes. All judges abide by a standard release agreement. You own your own work unless you enter into an option or purchase agreement with another party. Again, we encourage you to register your work.

How will my script be judged?

Scripts are first read cover-to-cover by an assigned judge who will make notes as he/she reads. Then feedback written and the script is scored on a 1-10 scale on the following elements: Concept, execution/structure, characters, dialogue, plot, and marketability. Scripts advance though each round on this basis, until the finals where judging is based on consensus.

Is the contest slanted to a particular genre?

No, all genres are equally respected and as much as possible; scripts are assigned to a judge who has an affinity for that particular type of material. Also, we have entered into agreements with a diverse range of production company partners and literary managers who are receptive to a wide variety of genres.

Do you confirm receipt of my script?

Yes! We send out an email to you as soon as we receive your script. If you don’t have an email address, then you will have to wait until we mail you your feedback (assuming you included an SASE in your submission). This is usually a few short weeks.
