"The Paper Route"
Interview:
I have written four screenplays, two of which have been semifinalists in the Nicholl Fellowships contest. 0ne of which I recently optioned to Michael Grais Productions (Poltergeist, Great Balls of Fire). I have been a workshop student of Yale screenwriting professor Marc Lapadula for seven years.
Is “The Paper Route” your first script? If not, what else have you
completed?
The Paper Route was my first screenplay. Since then I have completed “Visions” (psychological horror), “The Meat Eaters” (comedy/horror), and “Remember Me” (Romantic Mystery).
Why did you write “The Paper Route”? And how long did it take you to write it?
The Paper Route is a coming of age story of two brothers in southern Indiana in the 1960’s and draws upon my experience growing up in Indiana’s hill country, which is similar to Appalachia in many respects. I completed a first draft in seven months but have done extensive rewriting of the script over the years.
Describe your process; do you have a set routine, method for writing?
I very much appreciate being able to workshop 5-10 pages at a time as it allows me to set deadlines and make mid-course corrections.
What inspires you to write?
When I am close enough to the characters and to the place, then I feel a passion for their stories that I am able to channel.
Apart from writing, what else are you passionate about?
My wonderful wife, Connie, and our seven month old baby, Daniel. Also music (I play acoustic guitar and sing).
What influenced you to enter the Movie Script Contest?
It has established a solid reputation over the years as a well run and respected contest.
Do you feel that screenwriting contests are worthwhile for writers and why?
I have found contests to be an important marketing tool and also a great way to receive feedback and encouragement.
Who is your favorite screenwriter or writer and why?
Peter Hedges; I feel most close to his writing which is very personal and moving.
Any advice or tips you’d like to pass on to other writers?
Be kind to yourself.
What’s next for you?
I am hopeful the option of my screenplay VISIONS will lead to a successful production. I am working on a Washington, D.C.-based political mystery.
